October 7 and 8 - Ulan Ude
Editing and writing has consumed us the last couple of days, leaving almost no
time to see Ulan-Ude. Though we were able to pull away from our computers
long enough to visit "The Head": the biggest Lenin head in the world. Originally
sculpted for a exhibition in Canada in 1972, it was later placed in the main
square of Ulan-Ude.
Good news! After an excruciatingly slow transmission in Chita we have
lightning-fast lines here -- at least relative to what we are accustomed to. A
French company apparently came in and installed the local lines a couple of years
ago, God bless them.
And even better news: the weather has warmed considerably since that frightful
snow-covered morning, calming our fears -- for the moment -- of working in -40
degree temperatures while exploring Lake Baikal, our next stop.
