September 6 - Vladivostok

Lisa and I set out late in the afternoon in search of a commercial fishing boat that would let us go out with them on the following day.

We tried several different harbors, but each time we were told that we were at the wrong place and promptly given a new set of directions. Eventually we ended up on an electric train that brought us to a small harbor on the outskirts of the city. Outside of the train station two boys, Alexei and Ilya sat on the stairs eating hot-dogs. We stopped to speak with them and got directions to the harbor.

The harbor ended up being a bust. A bunch of very drunk fishermen and a couple of dilapidated boats. They wanted no part of letting us go out with them. I got the impression that the fishing (or whatever else they might be using those boats for) was not of a wholly legal nature.

Back at the train station I started to photograph a little blond girl sitting on a bench. After a couple of frames the man next to her told me I should ask permission first if I wanted to photograph his daughter. I told him I was sorry and asked if he minded if I took a few more photos. He said he didn't mind but got up off the bench so he wouldn't be in the picture himself. He walked over and began speaking with Lisa. His name was Oleg and the little girl was Anya. We road back into town on the train together and Oleg told us his story.
